The objective of this topic is to assist SSM by reviewing the material provided by TVEL regarding the design and mechanical properties of the TVS-K fuel.
The conditions of a nuclear reactor put great demands on the materials of the fuel and the consultant work would entail ensuring that the fuel design and mechanical properties fulfill quality and safety demands as well as identifying potential weaknesses associated with the fuel and risks which could lead to fuel damages or otherwise negatively affect the plant. The nuclear fuel is examined both analytically and experimentally by TVEL, the quality of which shall be assessed. Operational experiences of the materials and their compatibility with Ringhals 3 is of special interest. The used codes in the area of design and mechanical properties shall be assessed for quality assurance and applicability in Ringhals 3. The safety assessment should include, but is not limited by, stress, strain and fatigue properties, as well as assembly holddown forces, creep, fretting wear, cladding stability and diameter increase. The TVS-K fuel’s compatibility with the Ringhals 3 reactor (including but not limited by surrounding fuel bundles and control rods) shall be assessed. Furthermore, it must be assessed if the TVS-K fuel can be handled and (long term-) stored.
