This is a desired development as MALDI-TOF provides quick and precise high quality answers with minimal operational costs. Quick and correct bacteriological identification is necessary for all rational treatment of bacterial infections including appropriate use of antibiotics. In recent years, diagnostics in this field have been revolutionised through the introduction of mass spectrometry with MALDI-TOF. The University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) procured their first MALDI-TOF instrument in 2013 and this has functioned as intended. UNN now needs 1 additional instrument for the following reasons: — The capacity of the current instrument is not sufficient after MALDI-TOF has replaced most of the other bacteriological identification. This is a desired development as MALDI-TOF provides quick and precise high quality answers with minimal operational costs. — Access to alternative identification cannot be maintained in respect to competence, instrumentation and consumables. This gives high vulnerability of operational outages. With two instruments, they can relieve each other pending servicing and repairs. — It is not appropriate to procure a completely different type of instrument as this would result in a lot of extra work in relation to the implementation, integration (interface) with the laboratory system, new contracts on instrument/consumables and operations. There would be unnecessary logistics and more work with two different systems in operation.
