Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation is conducting research on robotics, computer vision and machine learning. For this purpose, a domestic service robot is needed.
The robot will be operated in home-like environments by non-expert users. The operation will be under supervision by researchers. Use cases include object transport, operation of mechanical parts in the environment, and telepresence.
Typical object transport tasks include fetching of an object, such as a mug or a carton of milk, and presenting it to the user. To achieve this, the robot must be able to move around in a home-like environment, also traversing over thin carpets if possible. The robot must be able to reach objects in places where a human can reach them, e.g. on shelves or on a table. Communicating with/controlling the robot must be possible for people without special training via e.g. speech recognition or touchscreen.
The robot must be able to physically operate mechanical switches such as a light switch and door handles.
The robot must be usable for telepresence so that other people can communicate with the apartment's occupant via the robot through video. This requires a screen and a camera on the robot. |
