The Norwegian road network has a large number of bridges with a steel main support system, for example, trusses, beams, boxes and suspension cables. In addition there are many secondary steel bridge elements, for example, railings. Corrosion protection on recent steel bridges after approx. 1965 is carried out by a so-called Duplex system, i.e. metallisation plus painting system, whilst older bridges has a primer of Minium. As a part of the department programme ‘Lasting Constructions’ a sub project TB4 - Surface Treatment of Steel has been established.
The activities so far have been a review of the damage descriptions that are registered in the bridge management system BRUTUS, as well as special inspections of bridges to a limited extent.
The main aim with the activity is to establish sufficiently good understanding of the problems around corrosion protection/surface treatment of steel so as to be able to give clear recommendations for engineering design services for and the construction of new steel bridges, as well as to be able to give recommendations for the review of inspection and repair procedures.
