Short description

Svartisen is located on County Road 17 in Meløy municipality in Nordland. The tunnel is 7 624 m long and was opened in 1986. Roadway width is 5 m, and the clear height is 4.2 m.

AADT in the tunnel is 725 vehicles per day; the speed limit 80 km/h.

The contract is a unit price contract which mainly includes replacement of the electrical installation in the tunnel. Approx. 7 640 m of cable is to be drawn with branches to 6 technical rooms. New light fixtures, safety equipment, blowers, 5 new major junctions and 16 sub-junctions and establishment of new UPS's in all eight technical areas.

A previous contract already specifies accessways through the tunnel, and six new technical buildings in addition to the two existing ones. Altogether, the tunnel will have eight technical buildings, two of which are currently outside of the tunnel portals.

The current safety equipment shall remain operational until the new ones are in place and have begun working.

All existing emergency stations in the tunnel are to be replaced. The new ones will have two switches each and emergency phones on a fiber-based IP network. An fibre-based Ethernet shall be installed in the accessway through the tunnel, based in part on a master cable to be removed from a temporary suspension in the tunnel roof, and partly with new blown fibre in microtubes between the emergency station. In total, the tunnel will receive 32 emergency stations with approx. 250 m between each, six of which will be emergency kiosks integrated in technical buildings, while the remaining 26 are as emergency boxes mounted on stands in the tunnel wall. After all the new emergency stations are mounted, all old installation will the dismantled and delivered in an approved waste disposal site.

Evacuation lights shall be mounted approximately every 62.5 m along the tunnel wall, with the supply of emergency power from emergency stations or distributions.

Radiating coaxial cable for emergency networks and broadcasting shall be install along the cable run. The new digital emergency network will use antenna mounted next to the portal/transformer building at Kilvik side of the tunnel, a centre in a dedicated radio room in the new technical building T1 and repeaters in five other mechanical rooms. For DAB, antennae shall be set up on the Fykan side of the tunnel with a centre in the radio room in the T8 mechanical building that feeds 5 amplifiers in other mechanical rooms. Concerning DAB, "break-in units" shall be supplied and integrated into the emergency control panels in the emergency stations in the T1 and T8 "day buildings".

To ensure the safety of the tunnel through the construction period, the work shall be implemented in five distinct phases with specified gradual dismantling of existing installations. For each of the five phases, various requirements are also described for intervention and restricting traffic through the tunnel. Refer to Section D1. T1/36 "Phase Plan for project implementation."
