The toll collection companies are starting the process of procuring a new service for identifying vehicles passing our free-flow toll stations. The tender process will take place in 2024 and the services will start 1/5-2025.
Before we start the process we want to learn what technologies and systems that are available in the market so that we can create an optimal tender competition.
Earlier we have had different systems with an automated part (ANPR) to handle most of the images and a manual part (MIR) to handle the more difficult images. We now expect that AI and new technologies will minimize the need for MIR to give better, cheaper and more reliable solutions based on ANPR (with little or none MIR). But we do not know how mature these solutions are and how they are offered in the marked, and hence we want input on that.
The solution will process approximately 1 million passages every day. We typically have one front and one rear image, but due to snow, trailers etc., it may often be only one image. We also get images that does not contain license plates and need to be discarded. Most of the vehicles are Norwegian, but there are also many different other European LPNs.
We are also looking into the possibility of having lookup into the European vehicle registers so that the ANPR system can use that for filtering out trailers etc. and for identifying vehicles that are hard to identify by plate only.
For this phase we want short answers to the following questions:
- Is it to your knowledge a safe assumption that AI is taking over for MIR, and is it possible/advisable to skip MIR totally in this services starting from 2025?
- Are there anything else you want us to know about the new technologies that we can use in the upcoming tender process?
- Can you describe your offerings in this marked with new technology? Feel free to use standard presentations.
