GRID-Arendal was established in 1989 by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment to support environmentally sustainable development by collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners.
UNEP is mandated through UNEA resolution 4/21 to promote action against pollution as part of an Implementation Plan “Towards a Pollution‐Free Planet” and through individual resolutions addressing pollution‐specific issues. As part of this mandate UNEP is developing a Global report on where the world is in addressing pollution, which cuts across all areas of pollution and thus contributes to and build upon the work done by various UNEP teams on a range of pollution issues.
